ESS Summer School: “Trauma Management in the ER”

Organized by Markus Huber-Lang, Germany, Christoph Schlimp and Johannes Zipperle, Austria

This exciting workshop is offered to any student and junior researcher/clinician irrespective of the educational background and actual research field. The workshop will take place one day before the official ESS meeting begins (i.e. Wednesday, 20 September 2023). The main intention of the course is to give participants an all-around understanding of a real-life decision-making that must be taken in a modern Emergency Room (ER).

The workshop will be run by the experts-in-the-field and will feature chosen simulated emergency settings on polytrauma and associated complications. After a theoretical input, principles of the initial anesthesiological and surgical management will be demonstrated and repeated by the participants in a hands-on manner. In addition, monitoring methods and imaging of the polytrauma patients will be demonstrated and diagnostic strategies applied under realistic time-pressure. We expect an exciting training session for all participants.

The workshop will take place at the Lorenz Böhler Trauma Hospital and Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology, Donaueschingenstrasse 13, Vienna. Coffee breaks and lunch will be served. You will be able to safely store your luggage at the location if needed. Parking is also available (EUR 5/day) – please notify us in advance if you need to park your car.

Pre-registration is required just by an email to the ESS secretary: szabo.andrea.exp@med.u-szeged.hu. Workshop size is limited: the first 25 applications will be accepted (a waiting list will be available). Use this excellent opportunity to expose yourself to new knowledge and get to know your peers!

The 2023 ESS Conference Keynote Speaker: Alberto Mantovani

Dr. Mantovani is one of the most distinguished contemporary Italian scientists and one of the main contributors worldwide to the remarkable advancements in the fields of immunology and oncology. His current H-index is 216 and citations exceed 23000 (Google scholar). Dr. Mantovani earned his M.D. degree at his alma mater, the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy, in 1973. Following his residency in oncology at the Università di Pavia, Italy, he undertook a long journey in immunology and cancer research that brought him first to the UK and then to the NIH in the USA

Dr. Mantovani’s achievements have included discoveries of important molecular mechanisms that characterize inflammatory processes and of crucial aspects of the role of innate immunity in cancer. The impact of his contributions, ever since his early career in the ‘70s, has been defined by innovative paradigms that he has introduced, for instance the now well-known idea of tumor-associated macrophages acting as “corrupt policemen” that promote tumor progression (rather than helping in the fight against cancer). The impact of these discoveries has earned him not just a strong scientific reputation but also several prestigious awards such as the Triennial OECI Award from the Organization of the European Cancer Institutes, the Robert Koch Award, the American-Italian Cancer Foundation (AICF) Prize for Excellence in Medicine, the American Association for Cancer Research International Pezcoller Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Cancer Research and the Association for Cancer Immunotherapy‘s (CIMT) Lifetime Achievement Award.

Apart from his work on cancer, Dr. Mantovani has also been active in the field of acute illness; recently, he contributed to the identification of genetic profiles associated with COVID-19 and identified severity biomarkers of the disease. As a person at the crossroads of cancer and critical illness, Dr. Mantovani is uniquely equipped to cast two-directional bridges between those two fields. His outstanding body of knowledge generated by his multi-tier research activity makes him a qualified liaison able to transplant successes from the cancer field to address the most complex and unresolved problems in the field of various acute critical care conditions such as sepsis, shock and trauma.

Welcoming among our ranks one of the most accomplished European biomedical scientists is a unique gateway to novel ideas and solutions that we can put to a good use in our various fields of expertise.

To facilitate high participation of young/new scientists either of European origin and/or working in the European institutions, a total of 10 ESS travel grants of EUR 500 each will be provided by the European Shock Society (ESS) to junior* investigators based on scientific merit of the submitted abstract.

In order to be considered for an ESS Travel Award, applicants must simply fulfil the following steps: 

1. Mark the ESS Travel Award check box by abstract submission
2. The applicant must be the first author on the submitted abstract
3. The applicant must submit the abstract before the abstract submission deadline (July 31, 2023).
4. The congress registration fee must be paid by the abstract submission deadline.

 ESS Travel Awards will be awarded at the gala dinner on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

*ESS definition of the “junior investigator status”:

Every person, irrespective of age, with a maximum of 5 years of post-doc experience (or equivalent e.g. intern/resident etc.) qualifies as a junior scientist/investigator. You do not qualify if you currently hold any type of a Professorship appointment (e.g. Assistant Prof., Associate Prof., University Prof. etc.). Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. 

EUROPEAN NEW INVESTIGATOR AWARD COMPETITION in SHOCK RESEARCH

ESS Conference will again hold the prestigious European New Investigator Award Competition (ENIAC) as the central event to feature the best works of junior scientists. Out of all qualifying abstracts submitted by junior scientists* to ENIAC, five top submissions will be selected to the final ENIAC round at the ESS Congress in Vienna.

All qualifying abstracts will be first scored on merit in a blinded manner by five international expert judges (members of ESS/IFSS) to select the top five submissions. The judges will be selected only after abstract submission process has been closed to avoid any conflict of interest. 

Five finalists identified in the first-round selection process will then present their work in a ten-minute presentation followed by a short 5min Q&A session with a panel of five judges on Friday, September 22, 2023 in the Rising Stars session. 

Only the top three places will be ranked according to the total score received. 

Winner will be recognized with a commemorative plaque and a cash award of € 700. Second place will receive cash award of € 500 and third place of € 300. The fourth and fifth place will recognized with the ENIAC finalist diploma.

In order to be considered for ENIAC, applicants must fulfil the following steps/requirements: 

1. Mark the ENIAC Award check box by abstract submission
2. The applicant must be 1st author (or equally contributing 1st author) on the submitted abstract
3. The applicant must submit the abstract before the abstract submission deadline (July 31, 2023) and pay  the congress registration fee.
4. The applicant must send before the deadline (July 31, 2023): 
   a brief letter from his/her mentor confirming the participant's junior status* and her/his leading role in the project (pdf/word). Send the letter to: congress@auva.at and CC inge.bauer@med.uni-duesseldorf.de

We stress that only original and previously unpublished research should be submitted to ENIAC.
Only one abstract per applicant will be accepted.

All finalists will receive ENIAC participation certificates and awards at the gala dinner on Saturday (September 23, 2023).

Every person, irrespective of age, with maximum of 5 years of post-doc experience (or equivalent e.g. intern/resident etc.) qualifies as a junior scientist/investigator. To facilitate a high participation of international scientists (beyond Europe), up to two Presidential Travel Awards will be provided. The amount of each award is between EUR 500-1000 depending on the location/country of the applicant. This award is granted to investigators irrespective of their career status The award is based both on the scientific merit of the submitted abstract and/or need for financial assistance*(e.g. applicants from under-developed countries; the host institution unable to support participation, etc.). 

In order to be considered for an ESS Travel Award, applicants must fulfil the following steps/requirements:

1. Mark the ESS President Award check box by abstract submission
2. The applicant must be 1st author (or equally contributing 1st author) on the submitted abstract
3. The applicant must submit the abstract before the abstract submission deadline (July 31, 2023) and pay the congress registration fee.
4. The applicant must send before the deadline (July 31, 2023): 
   a brief letter explaining/justifying the need of financial assistance (pdf/word).

ESS President Award certificates will be awarded at the gala dinner on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

All invited congress posters will be grouped in defined thematic sections (e.g. Shock, Sepsis/Infections, Biomarkers, Trauma, Models of Disease, in Silico Modeling etc). 

A Best Poster Award (BPA) will be given to the top presentation in each thematic group. The independent BPA Committee will judge all posters during the two stand-alone lunch poster sessions (September 21 and 22, 2023). There is no career status restriction for BPA.

The BPA assessment will be based on the combined quality of: 

a) the poster itself, 

b) 3 min flash-presentation (by the presenting author) 

c) short Q&A follow-up. 

The attendance of the presenting authors is required in order to be considered for the Best Poster Award. 

Poster Awards are recognition-based and do not include any financial prize.

The awardees will be announced at the gala dinner on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

ESS Congress will feature three Specialty Area Company Awards (SACAs), each sponsored by an individual company. A SACA will be given to an abstract (either talk or poster) authored by a junior investigator/student* in a specific research activity area of each company. The recipient will be selected by each company in a blinded fashion based on the merit of submitted work. Each SACA in a form of a commemorative certificate accompanied by 500 Euro cash award will be given by a representative of a given company.

The Günther Schlag Award (GSA) is funded by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology (LBI) in Vienna, Austria in commemoration of the institute’s founder and its first director, Dr. G. Schlag. The Award in form of a commemorative certificate (accompanied by 500 Euro) is given to an outstanding European mid-level researcher (PhD degree and not exceeding an Assistant Professor rank) in the field of critical care and shock research. The selection is made by the LBI executive committee based on the merit of the submitted abstract and the candidate’s overall professional development.

The GSA recipient will be announced at the gala dinner on Saturday, September 23, 2023.
